Carolyn Murray invites community members to the kickoff of her campaign for Fifth Ward Alderman from 4 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 22 at Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center, 1655 Foster St.
Ms. Murray currently serves as the co-chair for Fifth Ward, which holds monthly community meetings for Evanston residents. As a prior Naval Reservist and community activist since 2006, Ms. Murray planned a candle light vigil in the Evanston Township High School football stadium, which was attended by more than 1,500 residents.
Ms. Murray organized a gun buyback that was held on Dec. 15, 2012. Less than three weeks after her son Justin’s murder. Nearly 50 guns were collected.
On Nov. 29, 2012 Ms. Murray’s 19-year-old son Justin was fatally shot in Evanston, which reinforces her passion to end gun violence in her community. Ms. Murray’s efforts have led to open communications with Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, First Lady Michelle Obama and the President Commander in Chief Barack Obama.
Ms. Murray continues to take a stand against gun violence through her work as the co-chair of West Evanston Strategic Team and continues to plan various community events. She attended the University of Illinois as an undergraduate double major of Business Management and Marketing. She now is a single mother of two children, Phillip and Ashton Loryn Murray.
