Evanston RoundTable writers and staff garnered 15 awards in the “non-daily” newspaper category at the annual Northern Illinois Newspaper Association awards banquet dinner on Oct. 20.

First place awards went to Victoria Scott for best personality profile (for her article on “The Muellers’ Stage Business)” and to Dick Peach for best sports columnist (for his columns on fishing).

Matt Simonette won an award for best personality profile (“Evanston Native Documents Her Family’s Escape from Nazi-occupied Europe”); Shawn Jones won an award for best watchdog reporting (articles on environmental hazards in James Park); Kelley Elwood won an award for best in-depth news story (“Evanston in the Midst of a Reading Crisis”); Mary Helt Gavin received awards for best spot news story (“Hundreds at Fountain Square Stand in Solidarity with Muslims”) and for best headline writing; Larry Gavin won awards for best technology/medical story (“Erie Family Health Center Helps Build Young Minds Through Reach Out and Read Program”) and for best educational reporting and best information graphics (achievement charts); and Kathy Ade won awards for best information graphics (the year- in-review portrayed on a monopoly-type board).

The RoundTable staff won awards for the RoundTable’s fall/winter 2015 magazine (Kathy Ade, graphic designer; and writers and editors Tom Benz, Judy Chiss, Kelley Elwood, Ellen Galland, Mary Helt Gavin, Mary Mumbrue, Victoria Scott, and Matt Simonette).

RoundTable staff also won awards for best niche publications, the Art and Life sections of the paper (Kathy Ade, graphic designer, Lynn Trautmann/LTPhoto Evanston, photographer, and writers Sue Brooke, Mary Helt Gavin, Mani Gomez, Janet Messenger, Mary Mumbrue, Eleanor Revelle, Emma Smith, Meg Evans Smith, and Natalie Wainwright).

The RoundTable won an award for best online paper (Nina D’Agostino and RoundTable staff).
