On Nov. 20, at approximately 2:40 p.m., the Evanston Police Department was dispatched to Pitner Avenue and Nathaniel Place in reference a traffic crash where the driver was attempting to leave the scene, said Commander Joe Dugan of the Evanston Police Department.
Upon arrival, officers learned that a 20 -ear old Evanston resident was leaning in the window of a vehicle driven by a 19-year old Evanston resident when the vehicle accelerated and struck a tree, which caused the 20-year old to be thrown from the vehicle into a light pole, said the Commander. The driver of the vehicle attempted to leave the scene, but was detained by citizens in the area until police arrival, he added.
The 20-year old resident was transported to St. Francis hospital due to head injuries and is listed in critical condition. The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody pending further investigation. The North Regional Major Crimes Task Force-Major Crash Assistance Team responded to the scene to conduct a crash investigation. A small amount of Cannabis was recovered from the driver of the vehicle, said the Commander.
Police subsequently announced that the driver of the vehicle was charged with reckless conduct (a felony) and other offenses. Investigators have been unable to interview the male Evanston resident that was hurt in the crash, said Commander Dugan. The driver was detained on scene by two bystanders after he attempted to flee the scene of the crash on foot, he said, adding that additional charges may be lodged at a later date.
