On Dec. 5 at 9:28 a.m., the Evanston Fire Department was dispatched to 635 Sherman Ave., a three story multi-family apartment building, for the report of smoke showing from the rear of the building. First arriving companies reported heavy smoke and fire conditions on the second and third floors of the building. The response was immediately upgraded to a box alarm, which brought in resources from other communities to assist firefighting operations and station coverage for the City of Evanston.

The fire appeared to have started on the second floor and extended to the third floor. Six units had extensive damage and 18 residents were displaced. There were no reported civilian or firefighter injuries. The Red Cross was dispatched to the scene for further assistance with the residents.

At this time, the cause is unknown and under investigation by the Evanston Fire Prevention Bureau.
