Lifelong Evanston resident Carlis Sutton has announced his campaign for Alderman of the Fifth Ward. He attended Foster Elementary School, Haven Middle School, and Evanston Township High School, and earned a bachelor’s degree from Arkansas AM&N College (now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff), a master’s degree in education from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and a J.D. from Texas Southern University. He has taught in the Chicago Public Schools system, and taught Sunday School at Second Baptist Church of Evanston, where he was ordained as a deacon in 1972.

Mr. Sutton has spoken at meetings of City Council, the City’s Plan Commission and the City’s Zoning Board of Appeals and at School Board meetings. He says his experiences – including his experience in the Peace Corps in Liberia – have well prepared him to serve the residents of the ,Fifth Ward.

Mr. Sutton joins a field of four other candidates, which the City’s Election Board said triggers the need for a primary election on Feb. 28.
