Martha Arntson, Andrea Handley, and Anne Van Heukelem recently met with Leslie Combs, district director for Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky to discuss their concerns over chances to the Affordable Care Act and HR 610, the Choices in Education Act of 2017. The group wished to show Rep. Schakowsky their support for the ACA and to acknowledge that millions of Americans could lose their health insurance if it is repealed. The women expressed their opposition to the Choices in Education Act of 2017, which would repeal the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 guaranteeing equal access to quality education for all children. Instead HR 610 would establish an education voucher program, under which the vouchers – distributed in block grants among local education agencies – could be used for private schools or home-schooling. The legislation would severely compromise public schools, the women said.
