The 13th Annual Justin Wynn Leadership Academy 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament was held on Saturday, March 4 in Beardsley Gym at Evanston Township High School. Approximately 200 players in grades 3, 4, 5, 6 participated in the co-ed tournament. A portion of the proceeds from this year’s tournament will go to help support Wildkit Buddies, an Evanston Township High School organization that promotes friendships between students with special needs and their peers.
Twenty three teams participated in the 3rd/4th grade tournament. The championship game for this group was a nail-biter. The game ended in a tie, and moved to a one-minute overtime. With only a few seconds left, Gunner Worth made a shot that won the game for his team. The first place winners were Kaloyan Mirtchev (Lincolnwood), Will Macdonald, Conlon Kane and Gunnar Worth (all from St. Athanasius). The second place winners were Malachi Gonzalez (Oakton), Nathaniel Commons (Oakton), Amare Leflore (Walt Disney Magnet), Tony Horton (Rogers).
In the 5th/6th grade tournament 31 teams participated. Taking first place were Daniel Goes, Gus Berne, Will Collins, and Jameson Kane (all from St. Athanasius). The second place winners were Eyan Simms, Jacob Hall, Devin Fox (all from Chute), and Riche McCourty (King Arts).
The Justin Wynn Fund was established in 1987 in loving memory of Justin Michael Wynn, who died in a swimming accident when he was nine years old. From this tragedy, the Wynn family and friends founded The Justin Wynn Fund and later the Justin Wynn Leadership Academy with the mission “to celebrate and nurture youth leaders by helping them develop a deep sense of self and responsibility for improving their communities.”
