Evanston’s unemployment rate dropped to 4.1 percent in February 2017—more than a percentage point lower than the city’s 5.2 percent unemployment rate in February 2016. The non-seasonally adjusted figures are according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

Evanston’s February 2017 unemployment rate was lower than the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin-IL-IN-WI Metropolitan Statistical Area (5.3 percent), the state of Illinois (5.5 percent), and the U.S. (4.9 percent). The average unemployment rate for Evanston in 2016 was 4.9 percent.

“These latest numbers show that our economic and workforce development efforts are paying off,” said Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl. “Eighty-six new businesses opened their doors in Evanston in 2016, while workforce development partnerships provided residents with valuable career training and employment opportunities. That’s great news for the whole community.”
