Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement after House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes announced he would be recusing himself from the investigation into Russian meddling into our election:
“Chairman Nunes’ bizarre and dangerous behavior over the last few weeks has clearly demonstrated that he has been compromised and is unfit to lead this crucial investigation. I am glad that he has recused himself – he should have done so a long time ago. It should not take several weeks and a few ethics probes for a member of Congress put the best interests of our country ahead of his relationship with the Trump White House. I hope that the remaining Republican members of the House Intelligence committee will work with Ranking Member Schiff and their Democratic colleagues to conduct an impartial, honest investigation. Further, I believe it is absolutely necessary to create an independent, bipartisan commission to focus exclusively on Russian efforts to undermine our election and to explore the connections between President Trump’s campaign and Vladimir Putin’s anti-democratic efforts.”
