After a long and loving life, William M. Stafford, 88, died April 2, 2017, in Three Crowns Park, Evanston. He was a teacher and principal in the Livonia (Mich.) Public Schools for his entire career and enjoyed a retirement of nearly 30 years.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Clarice, of Evanston, whom he met at a party on a beach by Lake Superior while both were attending Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Mich., where he was raised. Among his most enduring memories were summers he spent working on Great Lakes freighters in early adulthood.
Other survivors include two sons, Bill (Ingrid), Evanston, and Tom (Ann), Springfield, Ohio; four grandchildren, Sven Stafford (Katarina) of Santa Cruz, Calif., Will Stafford (Elizabeth) of Washington D.C., Christine (Jason) Huff of Springboro, Ohio, and Benjamin Stafford of Washington, D.C.; and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Stafford’s body was cremated, and a service will be held during the summer at the family’s convenience. Donations may be made in his name to the Stafford Scholarship, Northern Michigan University, 1407 Presque Isle, Marquette, Mich. 49855
