On May 7 at approximately 5:36 p.m., Evanston police tactical officers observed a vehicle with five occupants traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound on Church Street at Dodge Avenue, said Commander Joe Dugan of the Evanston Police Department.

After officers made a traffic stop of the vehicle, they noticed an odor of burnt cannabis emanating from the vehicle. The occupants were asked to exit the vehicle; and upon exiting, a loaded Smith and Wesson 9mm handgun fell from the waistband of the pants of one of the passengers in the rear seat, a 17 year old Evanston male, said the Commander.

Police determined that the handgun was reported stolen in Chicago.

The youth with the handgun was charged with Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, a felony, and other charges. The driver of the car was charged with reckless driving and other charges.
