To kids – like 6-year-old Aiko Smith and her 4-year-old brother Toshi, above left, and 5-year-old Imogen McDade, above right – the best window in Evanston is not made of stained glass. I is not beveled or etched or decorated in any way. However, decorating does go on behind it.

Kids of all ages love Bennison’s Bakery, on the southwest corner of Davis Street and Maple Avenue. They especially love the window on the north wall where Bennison artists, the icers, can be seen decorating all kinds of baked goods amidst shelves of sugary coatings in green and red and yellow jars.

In recent years, Bennison’s has even made it easier for kids to peer in by providing a simple railed stairway so they can climb up and watch the cookie and cake icers work their magic. That’s one window where fingerprints are welcome.
