On July 26, at approximately 11:18 p.m., police officers were patrolling in the 1800 block of Leland Avenue, when they observed a vehicle with two occupants fail to stop at a stop sign at the corner of Lemar Avenue and Lyons Street as well as a second stop sign at the corner of Leland Avenue and Emerson Street, said Commander Joe Dugan of the Evanston Police Department.
Officers conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle in the 1800 block of Emerson Street and upon approaching the vehicle noticed an odor of cannabis emanating from inside, said the Commander. A search of the driver, a 39-year old Evanston man, revealed a loaded Ruger 9mm handgun in his waistband, said the Commander. A search of the passenger, a 38-year old resident of Evanston, revealed he was in possession of just over 1 gram of cannabis, said the Commander.
During a further search of the vehicle, officers discovered a second 9mm magazine containing twenty-one 9mm bullets and also 13 “jumping jack” fireworks. A check of the serial number on the handgun showed it to have been reported stolen out of the state of Georgia, said the Commander.
The driver was charged with Unlawful Use of a Handgun by Convicted Felon, and related charges. The passenger was issued a citation for cannabis possession and released.
