The Levy Senior Center congratulates Evanstonian Lewis Koppel for winning the State of Illinois Senior Spelling Bee held at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield on Aug. 14. Top senior spellers in the state competed for the State Championship as part of Senior Citizen’s Day celebrations at the fair. The competition was hosted by the Department on Aging.

The Department on Aging spelling bee participant handbook says that the program “provides Illinois adults age 50 and older the opportunity to showcase a lifetime of knowledge and to celebrate years of experience through their spelling abilities, allow continual learning, and keep their brains active.”

The program includes three levels of competition. Mr. Koppel advanced to the State Competition after winning the Regional Competition held at the Levy Senior Center in June and the Local Competition held at the Gibbs-Morrison Cultural Center in late April. The Levy Senior Center has organized spelling bee competitions since 2013.
