Aug. 20 was a perfect summer day – midday heat, occasional clouds and just the hint of fall – to end Evanston’s love affair with summer.
The Police and Fire departments were on hand to offer safety tips, and several other City departments and the Evanston Public Library offered information and activities. Giant plastic bubble balls and an artificial corn maze enticed children to the lawn of Ingraham Park, and in a nearby tent the band Suite Molly Seven entertained the more sedentary people – or those who just wished to rest a bit.
Mayor Steve Hagerty challenged kids with “Beat the Mayor” at their choice of, among other things, basketball, spelling, and state capitals.
Volunteers from the Kiwanis Club of Evanston grilled 1,000 hot dogs and 2,000 sausages, said Club President Jim Wolinski. The picnic ended with the grace and agility of the Jesse White Tumblers, leaping and cartwheeling and always landing on their feet, sometimes after a few forward or backward flips.
