On Nov. 26, at approximately 9:15 p.m., police officers responded to a call in the 200 block of Hartrey Avenue for a disturbance that involved two male subjects in a black Jeep. One officer saw a dark colored Jeep traveling southbound on Dodge Avenue from Brummel Street that was occupied by two males. The officer conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle in the 7500 block of North California Avenue in Chicago, said Commander Joe Dugan of the Evanston Police Department.

Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer noticed an odor of cannabis coming from inside. The driver, a 22-year old Evanston man, admitted to having cannabis in his possession, said the Commander. While conducting a search of the man, the officer recovered a loaded Taurus 9mm handgun from his jacket pocket. Officers also recovered approximately 2 grams of cannabis from the man.

The front seat passenger, a 25 year old Chicago man, was asked to exit the vehicle and upon doing so fled southbound on foot. Evanston police  with the assistance of Chicago police officers were able to locate the passenger and take him into custody. It was later determined that the two men were not involved in the original disturbance call, said the Commander.

The driver was charged with Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon and related charges. The passenger was charged with resisting/obstructing a police officer, said the Commander.
