The City of Evanston and Northwestern University on Wednesday completed a joint emergency response tabletop exercise as part of ongoing efforts to ensure public safety and facilitate collaboration and coordination in the event of an emergency.

The exercise, which was months in planning, took place at the Northwestern and City of Evanston joint Emergency Operations Center, located at 1201 Davis St., in Evanston. Officials from both the City of Evanston Crisis Management Team and Northwestern’s Emergency Management departments participated.

During the exercise, which simulated a hazardous materials release affecting both the Northwestern campus and portions of Evanston, officials practiced and evaluated plans and procedures to mitigate, respond to, and recover from an emergency. The exercise allowed officials to work together in a joint Emergency Operations Center to test capabilities, including public information and warning, operational coordination and communication, planning, health and emergency medical services, and situational assessment.

The City and Northwestern will continue to work together to ensure public safety through emergency response planning and training, including holding periodic joint exercises.
