Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky released the following statement after voting “No” on the FY 2018 Consolidated Appropriations Act, known as the omnibus, which funds the government through September 30, 2018:

“The omnibus bill passed by the House earlier today includes many hard-won Democratic priorities, but it leaves major issues unresolved.

“Backed by tireless advocates across the country, Democratic negotiators stopped President Trump’s most abhorrent anti-immigrant requests, ensuring that we will not increase the number of detention beds and ICE agents or waste $25 billion on a border wall. Democrats secured investments in priorities like medical research, veteran’s health services, environmental protection, and child care. Democrats also won funding increases for America’s seniors, including Meals on Wheels, support for family caregivers, and the Medicare State Health Insurance Program.

“I applaud Leader Pelosi, Ranking Member Lowey, and the Democratic members of the Appropriations Committee for delivering real victories for the American people. However, I could not in good conscience vote in favor of a spending bill that leaves many Americans behind.

“This may be the last major piece of legislation to pass the Congress this year, and Republicans refused to resolve the most critical issues facing the American people. President Trump and Republicans in Congress held Americans’ health care hostage. Republican negotiators refused to include measures to prevent large premium increases next fall unless Democrats agreed to reduce women’s access to abortions. They did little to improve background checks for gun purchases and nothing to restrict deadly assault weapons. They also refused to provide certainty or a pathway to citizenship for 1.8 million Dreamers thrown into limbo by President Trump’s decision to rescind DACA. While leaving major problems unfixed, the omnibus further increases the Pentagon’s bloated budget and provides an unnecessary funding increase for border security.

“I will continue to resist Republicans’ wrongheaded priorities. Americans demand better health care, safer communities, and a long-term solution for Dreamers. Once again, Republicans in Congress failed to deliver.”
