The Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ Coastal Management Program has certified the City of Evanston’s Church Street Boat Ramp and Dempster Street Launch Facility as Clean Marinas.

The Clean Marina Initiative is a voluntary, incentive-based program that encourages marina operators and recreational boaters to protect coastal water quality by engaging in environmentally sound operating and maintenance procedures.

According to the IDNR, the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department “has done a wonderful job of keeping our waters clean by educating their boaters on clean boating practices and minimizing the amount of storm water runoff from their facilities. This is very exciting as Dempster Street Launch Facility is Illinois’ first certified boating beach!”

The Evanston Recreation Division will host the 2018 Great Lakes Water Safety Conference on April 26-27 at the Morton Civic Center. This is the first time the event will be held in Illinois. The 300-plus conference attendees will focus on ending drowning in the Great Lakes through education, prevention and intervention.
