The Merion, a senior living community at 1611 Chicago Ave., will begin LGBT aging training; to become the first community in Illinois to be SAGECare credentialed.

Recent studies suggest there are at least 1.5 million lesbian, gay and bisexual people 65 and older living the U.S. To receive a SAGECare credential, The Merion staff received training earlier this month by SAGECare instructor and local LGBT advocate Jacqueline Boyd. The instruction will include an overview of needs, concerns and the unique history of LGBT older adults.

The staff will also learn meaningful steps they can take to immediately improve the quality of support and services provided. After staff completes the training, The Merion will become one of the nearly 300 credentialed providers in the country.  The training will then be executed annually as part of the ongoing credentialing process. SAGECare is a program of SAGE, the country’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of LGBT older adults.
