On May 28, at approximately 8:30 p.m. Evanston Police were in the area of the 800 block of Hinman Avenue, looking for a  vehicle that fled from a traffic stop, said Commander Ryan Glew.

Officers detected an odor of cannabis that was coming from a parked White Hyundai. Officers made contact with a 22-year old Chicago man, as he exited and walked away from the vehicle, said the Commander.

The man was detained and officers went to the vehicle to investigate the odor of cannabis. One of the officers observed a magazine to a handgun in the interior. Officers then retrieved the magazine and located a loaded Smith and Wesson 40 caliber handgun. Three grams of suspect cannabis were also recovered, said the Commander

The man was arrested and transported to the station. He did not admit to possessing the handgun. He  was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, and cited for the cannabis, said the Commander.
