School for Little Children officially dedicated its Scholarship Garden located at First Presbyterian Church of Evanston on June 1.

The brick garden is raising money so the school, which has served the Evanston community for more than 80 years, can increase the number of families it supports with scholarships and provide more money to each family receiving scholarship support.

The school is halfway to its $100,000 goal.

A report last year from the Washington, D.C.-based Brookings Institution took a comprehensive look at studies on early childhood education and found “convincing evidence… that children attending … pre-K programs are more ready for school at the end of their pre-K year than children who do not attend pre-K.”

Students most often show improvements in literacy and numeracy; students also make improvements in their social-emotional and self-regulatory development.

“Our goal is to make early childhood education accessible to everyone in the Evanston community, no matter their income level,” said Chrissy Cornell, Director of the school.
