The North Shore Mosquito Abatement District has found the first West-Nile-virus-positive mosquitoes to occur in the District’s trap in Wilmette this year.
One batch of mosquitoes, collected on July 16 from an NSMAD trap in Wilmette tested positive for West Nile virus in the lab on July 18.
With the WNV-positive result from the Wilmette trap, every community NSMAD serves has had WNV- positive batches of mosquitoes, including Deerfield (Cook County), Evanston, Glencoe, Glenview, Golf, Kenilworth, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Northbrook, Northfield, Skokie and Winnetka.
The level of West Nile virus activity is moderate and increasing. Human infections typically occur during the months of July-September.
Remember, if it can hold water, it can breed mosquitoes.
