By now most everyone knows where and when the services for Lorraine Morton, beloved former teacher and principal at School District 65, former Fifth Ward Alderman and former Mayor of Evanston will be held: Visitation from 3 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 21 at First Church of God Christian Life, 1524 Simpson St. The funeral service begins at 11 a.m. in Alice Millar Chapel, 1870 Sheridan Road.
Until we learned this, the question many of us asked each other was “Where?” What place in Evanston was large enough? Where was there enough room? Several ideas surfaced: Haven Middle School, where she served as principal, the Civic Center, which was named in her honor, Evanston Township High School (the auditorium or even outside in the football field), someplace at Northwestern University, her alma mater.
What we were really asking, of course, was “Where is there a place large enough to hold her spirit, to hold the love the people in this community – and beyond – feel for her?
The answer is, “In our hearts.”
