The legendary Fisk University Choir will present “I, Too, Sing America” a benefit concert at Sherman United Methodist Church, 2214 Ridge Avenue at 7 p.m. on Oct. 19. With this concert, Sherman celebrates its 96th year of ministry in Evanston.

Originally named the Mozart Society, the Fisk Choir was formed in 1879 to assist the famed Fisk Jubilee Singers during their heavy touring season. The mixed chorus performs a diverse repertoire of choral musical genres including hymns, spirituals, gospel, classical and anthems. Led by musical director Dr. Christopher A. Duke, the choir is the oldest college choir in Tennessee.

“We are proud that in the past eleven years, this annual concert has raised over $60,000 for the Fisk University Scholarship Fund, which helps financially struggling students complete their education,” said Lawrence Hamilton, a member of the congregation.

Tickets are available by calling the church at 847-475-1973 or emailing office@shermanmethodist.org.
