Stories about hunger told by a Holocaust survivor when she was in third grade stayed with Maryalice Shockey of Elmhurst. She and some friends decided to find a way to help feed hungry children in this country. For the past few years they have organized carnival games and sports events for kids, with the entrance fee going to their hunger project.
This summer they chose the lunch program at Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center, raising $7,400 for the program.
Three of the six young women – Emma Wheatland, Martha Miklyugh and Ms. Shockey – attended the Oct. 22 City Council meeting, at which Lawrence Hemingway introduced them to the Council and audience members.
