In years past I have waited until my December column to discuss holiday gifts for anglers. However, this year the early season sales are too good to pass up so I thought I would pass along some ideas for the younger anglers on your holiday gift list.

The items I’m going to be mentioning are available through Cabela’s and may also be available elsewhere. I found them online at Cabela’s. These items that I’ve selected are reasonably priced and are well made to not fall apart after a few uses.

Let’s start with a “beginner” outfit. The Shakespeare Kids Spincast Combo at under $15 will get the beginning angler off to a great start with a quality piece of fishing gear. You can match the rod and reel with a new tackle box from Shakespeare for under $10 and your young fisherman will feel like a pro. Plano also has a nice entry level tackle box – the “Take Me Fishing” box for under $17. Either box will make a great start for the coming year.

If your angler is a little more advanced you might look at the Shakespeare Ugly Stik Youth Spinning or Spincast combo. This set-up looks less like a “kid” fishing rod & reel, and is a little beefier than the kid’s version. I have found that Ugly Stk’s are almost impossible to break.  Eagle Claw makes a really nice tackle box – the “Go Fish Extreme” that comes loaded with fishing goodies and is under $25.

I believe every fisherman should have and wear a life jacket, on board a boat of course. But also if you’re working along a shoreline and casting, it doesn’t hurt to have the life jacket on, especially for the younger fisherman. Always better to be safe than sorry and they are inexpensive, costing between $14 and $29 dollars.

Hope these ideas help during this coming holiday season. Until next time…keep a tight line.
