Throughout the Christmas holidays, I heard the song “Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer,” written by Johnny Marks, who adapted his brother-in-law Robert L. May’s story into a song.
As many of you know, the song is about a reindeer called Rudolph, who is different from the other reindeer because he has a “very shiny (red) nose.”
Rudolph is special.
Because Rudolph is different, the other reindeer ostracize him and call him names.
Then “one foggy Christmas eve,” Santa Claus asks Rudolph to guide his sleigh.
Well, because Rudolph is now closely affiliated with Santa Claus – a well-known, well-respected, well-loved being – Rudolph is now accepted and admired by the other reindeer.
This song(story) is not just a cute little kid’s ditty. It is a commentary on human behavior, that is: Association/affiliation with those perceived to be powerful can/may/will change how one is treated.
A new year begins soon.
Let us remind ourselves to treat people kindly regardless of their appearance and/or status and remind ourselves that we, too, are valuable regardless of our appearance and/or status.
