Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on the continuation of the partial government shutdown:

“Because he knows he cannot fulfill a core campaign promise of forcing Mexico to pay for his misguided wall, President Trump has chosen to sow chaos by using 800,000 federal workers as a bargaining chip and forcing a partial government shutdown. Neither the President nor the outgoing Republican majority in the House seem to care about the impact the shutdown is having on the hard-working federal employees who make all of our communities safer and stronger.”

“Tomorrow, Democrats will take control of the House of Representatives. Speaker-designate Pelosi has put forward a common-sense plan to end the shutdown. The two spending bills, introduced by Chairwoman-designate Lowey, include funding for all government agencies impacted by the shutdown through the end of the fiscal year as well as funding for the Department of Homeland Security until Feb. 8th, which will get Federal employees back to work. This will ensure each federal worker can make ends meet for their families, while continuing to provide the key services Americans across the country rely on.”

“I am hopeful the President and Senate Majority Leader McConnell will see the error in their ways and act quickly to end the shutdown and then begin border security negotiations in good faith.”
