On Jan. 3, as the newly Democratic House of Representatives gaveled into session in Washington, members of Indivisible Evanston held a demonstration at Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky’s Evanston office, calling for her strong support for the democracy reform bill, H.R. 1.

“We want to hold our reps accountable for passing bold, progressive legislation over the next two years, starting today with the House of Representatives first Bill of the 116th Congress. H.R. 1”, said Kathleen Long, co-leader of Indivisible Evanston.

“We’re here because of Trump’s shutdown, caused by his demands for a wasteful and harmful border wall. The first item of business in the House must be to re-open our government by passing a clean funding bill that rejects Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda. We also want the House to use its new oversight powers to hold Trump and his administration accountable via subpoena power, investigatory power and congressional hearings,” continued Ms. Long.

On Jan. 3, HR 1 was introduced in the House and referred to various committees.
