At 11:07 p.m. on Jan. 27, the Evanston Fire Department responded to 2017 Foster Ave. following the report of a structure fire in a two-story multi-family residence.

Residents were leaving the building quickly as firefighters rushed in and located a kitchen fire on the second floor, which was already extending into the attic above.

Firefighters quickly initiated an interior attack along with searches of the building, resulting in an all-clear of the 12 occupants. Due to the quick response, the fire was quickly extinguished within 30 minutes of the initial call. With the potential life hazard and cold temperatures, a MABAS Box Alarm was requested, bringing mutual aid fire and EMS companies from the surrounding communities for assistance.

Evanston paramedics did transport one occupant to Evanston Hospital for a minor back injury resulting from a slip and fall evacuating the building. The extent of fire and smoke damage to the structure displaced two families, who are both being assisted by the Red Cross. There were no reported firefighter injuries. The fire cause appears to be accidental but is still under investigation.
