In many communities the daily or weekly local newspaper delivered to the door is only a memory. And there is growing evidence that the loss of local media “watchdogs” has a negative impact on government accountability and civic engagement.

Evanstonians are fortunate to have several news outlets that cover local issues and events. But can they cover (to use the
New York Times’ slogan) “all the news that’s fit to print.” How do they decide what and whom to cover? How do financial and staffing constraints impact coverage?

What can readers do to support the sustainability of local news media?

Local journalists will speak on these issues at a community forum at 6 p.m. on April 3 at the Main Library, 1703 Orrington Ave. Members of the panel are Mary Helt Gavin, Publisher and Manager, Evanston RoundTable; Alan Perez, Editor in Chief, The Daily Northwestern (invited); Bill Smith, Publisher, Evanston Now; and Helen Gagel, Moderator, North Shore Village and League of Women Voters.

The evening will include a question-and-answer period with the audience.
