The Evanston Health & Human Services Department invites people of all ages and fitness levels to participate in the 2019 We’re Out Walking (WOW) program, a 12-week health and fitness initiative that aims to create a sense of community for those who live, work and play in Evanston.
Registration is now open online at cityofevanston.org/wow. In-person registration will also be accepted at the WOW kickoff event on Saturday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Evanston Township High School, 1600 Dodge Ave. The kickoff event will include local fitness vendors, motivational speakers, and demonstrations. Free parking is available.
Registration will be open throughout the 12-week program. All ages and fitness levels are welcome; Evanston residency is not required. The cost is $5 per person and includes free registration for a spouse or significant other. The program also includes group walks, health and fitness classes, a WOW t-shirt, and connection to a supportive walking community.
In addition to receiving the health benefits of physical activity, WOW participants will also be introduced to a variety of activities that promote health awareness and healthy lifestyles. All participants are encouraged to participate in fitness classes and seminars hosted by local organizations and neighborhood walks organized by volunteer walk leaders. Events, classes and walks will be posted in the coming weeks at cityofevanston.org/wow.
Studies show that regular physical activity at moderate intensity levels improves health and well-being, reduces stress, and decreases the risk for certain diseases. Physical activity does not need to be strenuous to be beneficial.
