On Sept. 23, the first day of fall, students from Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine made a trip to Westminster Place of Presbyterian Homes, where they offered “fall screenings.” The students used the Centers for Disease Control STEADI toolkit, which involved screening, assessment and intervention.
About 30 residents took part, receiving a blood pressure measurement and participating in tests of their balance and strength.
“Falls prevention is an interdisciplinary effort requiring education, intervention, and community supports such as the services provided through a community like Westminster Place,” said Dr. Margaret Danilovich, assistant professor of physical therapy and human movement sciences at Northwestern.
“This was also a great opportunity for physical therapy students to interact with older adults and gain experience working with this population.”
