The vocal ensemble Chicago a cappella returns to Nichols Concert Hall with “American Anthem: Songs that Challenge, Unite, and Celebrate.”

Inspired by a series on National Public Radio, the program will include folk hymns, powerful pop songs and familiar ballads, all representing critical moments from America’s past and social movements from Civil Rights to #MeToo. Ensemble member Kathryn Kamp, who created the concert, said she was “standing at the kitchen sink listening to NPR” when the idea struck her. Like many Chicago a cappella concerts, the radio series illustrates connections between music and history.

The program will take place at 3 p.m. on Oct. 26 at Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Ave. Tickets and information are available at chicagoacapella.org or
