As always, the tables were decorated, the crowd was mellow and the mood was jolly. The runway looked the same, but the setting was new, as the Chandler-Newberger Center played host to the perennial fall favorite, the Foster Fashion Show. Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center – on Foster Street, the club’s eponym – is temporarily under repair.
The annual fashion show and fundraiser of Evanston’s oldest senior club, the Foster Senior Club, attracts visitors by the score. This year’s show, “Stepping High in Style,” featured club members, community members and some local celebrities strutting styles of casual wear, “Casual Delight,” dressing to impress, “Unlimited Potential,” and evening wear, “Infinite Presence.”
With Rita Askew as fashion commentator, models one by one took command of the runway, resoundingly appreciated by the audience. Making his fashion show debut, Mayor Stephen Hagerty first greeted the audience and said he “appreciated the community you have created with the Foster Senior Club.” Later he joined the other models, including fellow City Council members Aldermen Cicely Fleming and Robin Rue Simmons. Two returning models, both Evanston residents, were State Representative Robyn Gabel and Foster Senior Club Senior of the Year Alice Turner. Ms. Turner will be 100 years old in December.
