The Evanston Fire Department Issued the following statement on the death of Chaplain David Jones:
It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we report the passing of our beloved Chaplain, David Jones. David passed away peacefully on the morning of February 11, surrounded by his loving wife, family and friends. He was 71 years old.
David was appointed our Chaplain on Patriots Day in 2011 and since that time, he transformed what it truly means to minister to firefighters, police officers and those in the community we serve.
He unfailingly placed the needs of others first as he actively supported each and every one of us both professionally and personally. From a shoulder to lean on after a sad or tragic call for service on the street, to the joy of officiating a wedding of one of our members, he was always there; always positive. He was steadfast in his love and support for over 300 firefighters and police officers and their families and, as a result, became a genuine member of our department and our family in every respect.
Inextricably linked with this kind and giving heart was the soul of a man that displayed nothing but humility, courage and grace in fighting cancer. He was inspirational as he continued to work, support and love us all to the very end.
