YWCA Evanston/North Shore’s annual Stand Against Racism will be held next week but with a twist. Instead of standing shoulder-to-shoulder in support of eliminating racism, families, schools, faith-based groups, and other organizations are invited to participate virtually the week of April 20.
Event organizers at YWCA Evanston/North Shore are asking local residents to create signs, tell stories, engage in a project, or read the Stand Against Racism pledge together and post these activities on social media and tag YWCA Evanston/North Shore. Photos and videos also can be emailed to the YWCA at equityinstitute@ywca-ens.org for inclusion on the organization’s website.
“The Covid-19 crisis reminds us that racism is more than personal bias,” said Tiffany McDowell, director of YWCA Evanston/North Shore’s Equity Institute, which promotes racial and gender equity. “For example, black residents of Cook County are dying from the virus at a much higher rate than white residents. This shows us that our structures and systems are not yet equipped to support all of us.”
