On June 6 at 5:49 p.m. an Evanston Police Officer was conducting traffic enforcement in the area of Lake and Dodge. The officer observed a gray BMW X5 traveling southbound on Dodge with an equipment violation. The officers initiated a traffic stop Dodge and Lee.
While the officer was contacting the driver of the vehicle, he noticed the smell of unburnt cannabis emanating from the vehicle. Based on the officers observations, he requested the K-9 officer respond to the traffic stop. The K-9 officer deployed his dog, the K-9 alerted to the presence of contraband in the vehicle. The officers then searched the vehicle and discovered 84 grams of cannabis and a loaded handgun in the center console of the vehicle.
Abbott was arrested and transported to the station. Officers learned the driver does not have a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification Card (FOID) nor Concealed Carry Licence (CCL). He was charged with unlawful use of weapon possession by a felon, as well as unlawful possession of cannabis with intent to deliver. After posting bond, the man is being monitored electronically, with a court date of Aug. 10 at the Skokie Courthouse.
