The Evanston Chamber of Commerce is deeply saddened by the recent shooting of Evanston’s own Jacob Blake, Jr., in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Blake family name is synonymous with community service, religion and civil rights in the city of Evanston, and in communities like Chicago’s Englewood and Lawndale neighborhoods.
Our thoughts are with the entire Blake family, and we hope for the speedy and full recovery of Mr. Blake, as well as for justice for him and his family. The Evanston Chamber is committed to raising awareness of racial injustice and advancing racial equality and justice in our community, our state, and our nation.
Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church (1109 Emerson St., Evanston) is where Mr. Blake’s grandfather, Rev. Jacob Blake Sr. was a pastor. Ebenezer AME will be holding an outdoor “Community Service of Lament” on Sunday, August 30 at 2 PM.
This service will include;
· A discussion of the Black Lives Matter movement.
· A brief history of the connection between the Blake family and the city of Evanston.
· Speeches from clergy addressing how to confront racism and work towards reconciliation.
· A chance to begin the healing we need as a community.
Community members are invited to attend to show your support for the Blake family.
