Congressional representatives from Illinois appear to be safe, though hunkered down, as mobs stormed the U.S. Capitol in an effort to disrupt the counting of electoral votes early this afternoon.

A spokesperson from Representative Jan Schakowsky’s office told the RoundTable she is “safe” and might offer more information later. There was no answer at the office of Senator Dick Durbin. About an hour ago, Senator Tammy Duckworth tweeted, “I have spent my entire adult life defending our Constitution and people’s rights to peacefully demonstrate. I never thought I’d need to defend democracy from an attempted, violent overthrow in our own nation’s Capitol. I will not yield to those who seek to harm our democracy.”

The Chicago Tribune and Crain’s have each posted reports from other representatives from Illinois. The RoundTable will update this post as information comes in.
