On Feb. 19, at 1:23 p.m., Evanston Firefighters, responding to a report of black smoke and flames coming from the roof of a single-family residence, rushed to  the 2100 block of Seward Street.

First responding companies encountered an attic fire with heavy smoke and flames visible from the street. Due to a quick and aggressive offensive attack, the fire was extinguished approximately 30 minutes after the initial call.

Two residents self-evacuated before the arrival of fire companies. Interior crews safely evacuated one dog. There were no reported occupant or animal injuries.  Due to icy conditions, one firefighter suffered a minor ankle injury.

The American Red Cross is working to provide housing, food, and social services for those impacted.

Additional personnel from neighboring municipalities assisted Evanston Fire Department staff in battling the blaze.
