Reader Questions Closure of Greenwood Beach in 2020

There has been some discussion about equitable access to Evanston beaches during the summer months in local news.
The current thesis is that minority families cannot afford to pay the price of beach tokens.
My question is, why was the very large Greenwood beach closed to anyone who does not own a boat or watercraft during the pandemic summer of 2020? Surely, there was an element of class discrimination present in that decision?
While the fortunate few were lounging on the nearly empty Greenwood beach, poorer Evanstonians were crowded together on the rapidly eroding Lee Street beach.
I hope that the bureaucrats who set the rules in our town will not restrict access to any (or some) of our beaches during the summer of 2021, so that families who choose to use beaches can remain safe as they wait for vaccinations to become available.
