Mary De Jong sent this photo of the sunrise on March 20, the vernal equinox. The new season officially arrived at 4:37 a.m. central daylight time. Folklore has it that eggs can be balanced at the equinox. This is true, but that can be done at any time; the equinox has no influence on egg-balancing. Nor is the popular notion that violent storms accompany the equinoxes based in fact. Nonetheless, the sunshine on March 20 was a welcome sight over Lake Michigan.
