The Housing Authority of Cook County (HACC) and Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle delivered boxes of fresh produce door-to-door to vulnerable seniors residing at Victor L. Walchirk Apartments in Evanston on June 25. Residents at Walchirk, who are low-income seniors and people with disabilities, received Top Box Foods boxes filled with fresh, high-quality fruits and vegetables and frozen protein items.
Top Box Foods is a community-based nonprofit offering a variety of healthy boxes of food at discounted prices up to 40% less than retail.
HACC made its initial delivery of Top Box produce and meats during the first wave of the pandemic in June 2020. HACC used CARES Act funding to procure grocery deliveries for residents of over 1,500 households. Most of these households have individuals who are elderly or disabled, for whom the need to shelter in place was especially urgent.
The Walchirk Apartments, located at 2300 Noyes Court, are independent living, one-bedroom apartments for seniors 62 and older. About 90 seniors currently live there.
