Sue E. Peterson (nee Bigham) – age 78 – passed away peacefully June 2, 2021 at her home in hospice care in the company of her husband of 53 years David, son Mark of Raleigh, NC and daughter Carolyn Peterson-Lial of Monroe, WA – following a long struggle with complications from metastatic breast cancer.
She was an aunt to several nieces and nephews and was preceded in death by her parents William “Bus” Bigham and Florence Bigham, sisters Judy Dean and Jan Bigham. Sue is survived by her brother Bruce (Lillian) Bigham of Lincoln, MI.
She was born near Portland, Oregon and raised in Alpena, MI. Attended Alpena H.S. and was valedictorian of her 1961 class. She graduated from The University of Michigan with a degree in Special Education and also earned a Masters degree in Special Education for Emotionally Disturbed Children from Northeastern University in Chicago.
Sue worked for many years as a licensed social worker at the Irene Jocelyn Clinic in Northfield, IL as a child therapist and intake coordinator. She also worked at NorthShore University HealthSystem (Evanston Hospital) in their Perinatal Family Support Center providing emotional care and aid to parents with high-risk pregnancies, infertility, infant loss, and postpartum depression. She had a successful private practice as a psychotherapist.
Sue will be remembered as a phenomenal gourmet cook of some renown. No matter how complicated or involved the project was, cassoulet or cioppino, for example – No problem! She was an avid reader of paperback novels and could easily read one per day. She was also an active member for several years of Northwestern University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute where she enjoyed learning about many different unrelated subject matters.
We will miss her loveliness, smile, beauty, and class.
Memorial donations may be made in her name to: NorthShore University HealthSystem Foundation, Kellogg Cancer Center, 1033 University Place #450, Evanston, IL 60201.
