Installation of the new mural under the viaduct at Washington and Custer Streets began Oct. 19 beneath a bright full moon. The mural design, by Evanston artist Ben Blount, draws language from the City of Evanston’s 2019 Resolution to End Structural Racism and Achieve Racial Equity. The wall is the property of the CTA, which must approve any mural proposed for their walls, as it did this one.
Blount’s talented installation crew included local muralist Daniel Burnet, as well as Lea Pinsky and Dustin Harris of EMAP, the Evanston Mural Arts Project. EMAP is under the umbrella of Art Encounter, an Evanston-based non-profit organization dedicated to educating, empowering and connecting people of diverse ages and backgrounds through interactive encounters with visual art.
Passersby can watch the artists at work as they complete installation of the mural over the next few days.
