At 12:40 p.m. Sunday Evanston firefighters responded to a report of an unresponsive child on the 1800 block of Church St. at Mount Pisgah Ministry.
The Evanston Fire Department said first-arriving companies were there within minutes, detecting carbon monoxide levels over 500 parts per million within the structure. Eleven people required medical attention and were treated on location, according to a Fire Department news release. Six were transported to local area hospitals with five patients refusing transport, the news release said. All those transported were in stable condition, according to the release.

Initial reports indicate the source of the carbon monoxide leak originated from the furnace, the Fire Department said. Further investigation is being conducted by Nicor to rule out additional sources of carbon monoxide, the news release said.
A second-level ambulance box alarm was called to bring seven additional ambulances into Evanston, the news release said. The extra equipment and personnel from neighboring municipalities helped provide Evanston fire station coverage and assist Evanston Fire Department personnel with patient treatment and transportation, the release said.
As the cold weather season arrives, the Evanston Fire Department reminds residents to have their heating units serviced and to ensure their carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are working properly.
