Mayor Daniel Biss has issued this statement:
As you may know, Ninth Ward City Council member Cicely Fleming has announced she will leave office on Feb. 15 to spend time working on issues she’s passionate about.
As Mayor, I have greatly appreciated Council member Fleming’s insight, her tireless advocacy for Ninth Ward residents and her unwavering commitment to improving the lives of all Evanston residents.
To ensure that the Ninth Ward continues to be well represented on the City Council following Council member Fleming’s departure, I am launching a process to fill the Ninth Ward seat. Here is the timeline I plan to follow:
- Today – Applications open for 9th Ward Councilmember seat (Apply here!)
- Monday, Feb. 14 – Applications are due.
- Tuesday, Feb. 15 – Council member Fleming’s resignation is effective.
- Thursday, Feb. 17 (tentative) – Public meeting where candidates will make presentations (additional details to be announced).
- Tuesday, Feb. 22 – Announcement of appointment
- Monday, Feb. 28 – Confirmation of mayoral appointment comes before City Council.
Under state law, the candidate appointed by the mayor and approved by City Council to fill this vacancy will serve until the municipal election in 2023.
If you’re interested in representing the Ninth Ward, please complete the application by Feb. 14. I would also ask you to share this information broadly and encourage others who may be interested in public service to apply. I look forward to an open, inclusive process that will enable us to best fill this important role in our City government.
Thank you, and please join me in wishing Council member Fleming the very best in her future endeavors.
Sincerely,
Daniel Biss
Mayor
