Evanston Township High School’s Math Department held its 42nd annual Bridge Building and Breaking Contest. The winner of this year’s competition was Maddy Varela with a bridge that held 5.0 kilograms. Varela is a student in Maryjoy Heineman’s and Matthew Kaiser’s class.

The ETHS Bridge Building Contest allows students to apply the math and science lessons from their classes to a hands-on project. Students design and construct small straw bridges that are weighed, tested and scored for efficiency.

Alfredo Torres won second place with a bridge that held 4.2 kilograms. Torres is a student in Ivana Cuvalo’s class. Third place went to Dylan Bonn with a bridge that held 4.1 kilograms. Bonn is a student in Niraj Javia’s class. And fourth place went to Alice Lemmon with a bridge that held 3.8 kilograms. Lemmon is a student in Jacob Mills’ class.
